Sport
The Zugspitze and Garmisch-Partenkirchen regions are known as a paradise for mountain sports fans, and for good reason. The unique mountain landscape with its topography offers the best conditions for all types of Alpine sports. Skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and snowshoe treks are all available in the winter. In summer, go walking, swimming, cycling or paragliding. Grainau is located right at the foot of the Zugspitze and therefore offers the best conditions for all those who like to be the first to catch the lift in the morning. Here on the border between Bavaria and Tyrol, the nature remains unspoiled and the varied rock formations and rich flora and fauna will leave a lasting impression. Art & culture
Culture enthusiasts can set off in search of Bavarian history. Follow the steps of the fairytale king, Ludwig II, in Schachenhaus and the royal palaces of Linderhof and Neuschwanstein. The region’s museums such as the Franz Marc Museum in Kochel or the Geigenbaumuseum in Mittenwald have plenty of interesting exhibits to offer visitors. There are also a number of large events taking part nearby, such as the Oberammergau Passion Play.
Bavarian traditions and festivals
Tradition
The Oktoberfest has gained a worldwide reputation and draws millions of visitors to Munich every year. But that’s by far not all! Bavarians are famous for protecting and upholding their rural traditions. Anyone on holiday in Bavaria should visit at least one of our local traditional festivals. The best traditional costumes and animals can be seen at events such as the Almabtrieb cattle driving ceremony, Assumption Day, Whitsun or on 1st May.
